Alkaline Foods

Over the years, the human diet has become increasingly acidic.  This is thanks to sugar, caffeine and other substances that throw off the body’s ph balance.  If we eat too much of them, not only will we feel weak, but we will also gain weight.  For these reasons, most nutritionists believe that we need to increase our consumption of alkaline foods.  By eating more alkaline foods, we will lose weight while improving our health.

How Does the Alkaline Diet Work?

According to the latest research, when a person goes on an alkaline diet, 70% of their foods would be alkaline, while the other 30% would be acidic.  Dr. Baroody, an MD, believes that this is the best approach for maintaining a healthy ph level.

The Best Alkaline Foods

Fruits & Veggies: The Healthiest Options for Alkaline Foods

Fruits and veggies are the perfect alkaline food.  They contain a myriad of nutrients ranging from folate to magnesium.  Plus, they are very effective for preventing cancer and other serious diseases.
When eating fruits and veggies, make sure you consume them as they are.  When you eat raw fruits and veggies, you gain access to all of their nutrients.   Just make sure you do not limit yourself to one or two servings each day.  According to the government, you need five to nine servings of fruits and veggies for optimal health.  Each serving should equal about a cup of food.

Nuts & Seeds:  The Best Alkaline Foods for Snacking

The FDA recommends that people need to increase their
consumption of nuts.  Almost all varieties are alkaline foods.   They also possess a wealth of nutrients, some of which are hard to find in the traditional American diet.   If all that is not enough to convince you, think about the health benefits associated with nuts.  Their ability to lower LDLs will automatically make your heart healthier.  However, be careful not to overdue nut consumption.  While you should eat as many alkaline foods as possible, If the food contains as much fat as most nuts, you will need to be careful.   Eat smaller portions.  So instead of eating a bowl of nuts during a television show, sprinkle a handful over a salad.  Make sure you consume at least 1.5 ounces, as that is the recommended amount.

Seeds fall on the other end of the spectrum, at least when it comes to alkaline foods.   They are not as fatty as nuts, but you should still make sure that you are not going overboard.  The USDA recommends that you eat 1 ounce of seeds each day.

Spices: The Tastiest Choice of Alkaline Foods

When it comes to alkaline foods, spices offer the most exotic flavor.  And unlike some of the other contenders in our alkaline food list, spices can be eaten in very small quantities.  Just 1 tablespoon of cinnamon is enough to lower LDL cholesterol, provided that you eat it each day.  This should not be very difficult, considering how tasty cinnamon is.  It can be added to fruit, hot cereal or even ice cream.   Some of the other spices are not as versatile, yet they still need to be consumed regularly.  Ginger and basil are a couple of examples.  Both of these spices work best in more savory dishes, though ginger can also be used in teas and soups.
